This page provides information on how I use the Secretarial Assistance Allowance, and the General Expenditure Allowance, provided by the European Parliament, as well as a link to my Declaration of Interests.
Use of Allowances
For information on how I, and other Labour MEPs are required to use the allowances, see EPLP guidance note on the use of allowances: http://www.eurolabour.org.uk/Transparency
The expenditure of Labour MEPs’ general expenditure and secretarial allowances is reviewed by an independent qualified accountant who provides the EPLP with a signed letter testifying that the allowances have been spent in accordance with the Parliament rules and the EPLP’s own guidelines (see above).
My audit certificate can be viewed here.
I employ the following staff from my secretarial allowance:
CONSTITUENCY PARLIAMENTARY OFFICER (full time – UK)
REGIONAL COMMUNICATION OFFICER (full time – UK)
PARLIAMENTARY ASSISTANT (full time – BRUSSELS)
LGBT OFFICER (full time – BRUSSELS)
PERSONNEL MANAGER (part time – UK & BRUSSELS)
PAYING AGENT (part time)
RESEARCH OFFICER (jointly employed with 11 other MEPS – BRUSSELS)
I employ my civil partner, Paul Cottingham who has responsibility for personnel and diary matters.
Together with all EPLP MEPs, I contribute to the salary of an additional staff member who is line managed by the EPLP Secretary General.
