Time to tackle violence against women and domestic violence – join Michael Cashman CBE, MEP on 14 February

one billion risingThe European Parliament has called on the European Union and its member states to step up efforts in tackling violence against women.

MEPs backed a motion on Tuesday which called for an EU strategy against violence against women which includes a new directive from the Commission and a request for Member States to sign and ratify the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women.

He said:

“I am pleased that the Parliament has reaffirmed its commitment to tackle violence against women. But actions speak louder than words and more needs to be done.”

The vote in the European Parliament comes ahead of ‘One Billion Rising’, the global day of action which takes place on V-day (14th February), which seeks to highlight the fact that one in three women are victims of violence in their lifetime.

Cashman added:

“It is every woman’s and every man’s right to live in a world where they are free. Free to be who you want to be, free from any violence because of who you are.

“That’s why I will be taking part in ‘One Billion Rising’ on February 14th. I urge others to do likewise, and join me to strike, dance and rise because together we are a stronger celebration.”
